Work-Life Balance: Is It Possible for CPAs?

Work-Life Balance

Being an accountant can seriously suck sometimes. Long hours, clients that are never satisfied, and deadlines that make you wonder why you even chose this career. If you’re at one of the Big 4, it’s probably even worse, work has turned into nothing more than a way to get a paycheck, with little regard for work-life balance.

We’ve been there, felt that same exhaustion, and knew something had to change. We wanted to be able to spend time with our family at the end of the day without feeling stressed and burned out. That’s why we completely shifted our mindset and created a work culture that people actually want to be part of.

We’re living proof that you can balance making good money and keeping your sanity intact. Our accountants aren’t on the edge of burnout, gasping for air between deadlines. They’re sticking it to the IRS and doing it on their own terms—with time left over to enjoy their life outside the office.

In this blog, we’re going to break down exactly how we’ve done it, how we turned a stressful, burnout-prone career into one where our team actually looks forward to work. No overtime. No constant stress. Just a fulfilling career that lets you have a life. Check it out for yourself!

Building a Fun Work Culture

What does a fun work culture look like? For starters, it means ditching the stiff corporate lifestyle that often comes with working in an office. For us that meant no suits or ties at the office, t-shirts are work appropriate.

We’ve all had those days—watching the clock, counting down the minutes until you can finally escape. If that’s a daily thing, it’s a sign of a bigger problem. How can a team thrive when the culture keeps everyone glued to their desks all day with no room to breathe?  It’s not just unproductive, it kills any chance of real work-life balance.

Instead, intentionally build a work culture that values people over just cranking out numbers. One of the first things you should do is encourage real breaks—like, actual time to recharge. Whether it’s taking a quick walk, enjoying a relaxed coffee without feeling rushed, or just stepping away from the desk for a bit, make it clear that taking a breather isn’t just allowed—it’s preferred.

A fun work culture should be about creating an environment where people feel free to be themselves, and form long lasting friendships. Allowing the team to feel casual and comfortable at the office and encouraging them to take breaks and talk to their coworkers are just two ways to build a fun work culture. Soon you’ll notice work isn’t just about clocking in and out, it’s a place where team members actually enjoy going to work.

The Power of Weekly Training

Having regular team meetings is a great example of how we grow as a company. And no, we’re not talking about those boring huddles where you sit through yet another PowerPoint on why we should use fewer Post-Its or why the office printer has mysteriously stopped working again.

Team meetings are about things that actually matter to you, not just your job. Dive into topics like creating better habits that stack up over time for real growth. Or how to have those hard conversations at work without feeling like you want to crawl under your desk. Plus, topics like personal finance and managing your money, because let’s be honest, everyone could use a little help with that.

These aren’t your typical “look productive” meetings. They’re genuinely useful, whether you’re using them at work or in your personal life. This isn’t something that was just slapped together because it sounded good on paper. These meetings are how every other company should operate. We believe that if you’re going to spend a big chunk of your life working, it should be at a place that wants to see you grow, not just in your job, but as a person too.

Feedback

Making the Most of 1 on 1 Feedback

Let’s talk about those one-on-one meetings with your manager. You know, the check-ins where you sit there and nod while trying to think of something positive to say about your workload. Those are completely useless.

One-on-ones should have purpose and be engaging, not filled with awkward silence or the manager droning on.

Having clear metrics for every role will help you level up in a big way. You can actually see your progress and leave the office each day feeling like you’ve crushed it! And when you hit those goals expect more than just a pat on the back—you’ll see the benefits in your compensation, too. The better you do, the better you’re rewarded. Now that’s what we’re talking about!

When you have a one-on-one, it’s all about helping you get where you want to go. Whether you’re looking to learn a new skill, work through challenges, or just have an honest chat about your progress, that time is dedicated to you and your growth. Who knows, you might even leave feeling motivated instead of counting down the minutes!

One-on-ones and clear metrics are game-changers for your growth and work-life balance.  They give you a chance to set goals, chat about any challenges, and track how far you’ve come. This way, you’re not just going through the motions, you’re actively shaping your own journey. With regular check-ins and clear benchmarks, you can really see what it takes to move forward in your role.

Recognizing Growth

Let’s talk about recognition—not the “Employee of the Month” plaque that collects dust in a corner, but real acknowledgment of your growth and contribution. We’re pretty excited to have been recognized by Comparably as one of the top companies for career growth in 2024. Now we didn’t share this recognition to brag, but because the way we got there was by genuinely investing in the people on our team.

Sure, the recognition from Comparably is great (we’ll take it!), but it’s not our end goal. It’s just a sign that we’re on the right track and the things that we’ve been talking about work. The real win is that our team members feel like they’re growing and thriving—both personally and professionally.

We’ve heard the stories from people at other companies, grinding away just to get a quick shoutout from their manager or seeing minimal raises and bonuses. It can feel like you’re fading into the background. But you’re not invisible; you’re someone who makes a difference, and you should be recognized for that.

Many companies see this process as just ticking off a box, but it should be more than that. It’s about having ongoing conversations that help you map out your career path and support your work-life balance. This is another benefit of one-on-ones, where you can regularly discuss your career with your supervisor.

Also regular shoutouts in team meetings are a great way to recognize team members for the great work they do. It creates an environment where the team is ready to celebrate with you.
